A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While Nintendo Switch Online boasts a robust Game Boy Advance library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the Switch eShop. We've compiled ten favorites – four Game Boy Advance and six Nintendo DS gems – presented without specific ranking.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. Although the original Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a personal preference, this GBA iteration offers a solid alternative. A worthwhile comparison piece, and arguably a more streamlined experience. Steel Empire remains enjoyable regardless of the platform, appealing even to non-shooter enthusiasts.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
While the Mega Man X console series faltered, the Mega Man legacy found a true successor on the GBA with Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an excellent side-scrolling action series, though its initial entry shows some early developmental imperfections. These rough edges are smoothed out in subsequent installments, making this the perfect starting point for the series.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A Mega Man double-feature is justified here, as Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer distinct gameplay experiences. Battle Network is an RPG with a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later installments show diminishing returns, the original game provides ample enjoyment.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
The Castlevania Advance Collection contains multiple worthwhile titles, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it's even preferred over the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the engaging gameplay outweighs any potential grind. Its unique setting and hidden secrets solidify its status as a top-tier GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
The original Shantae gained cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, released on DSiWare, broadened the Half-Genie Hero's appeal, establishing Shantae's enduring presence across console generations. Its origins are somewhat ambiguous, stemming from an unreleased GBA title, which is slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA title (its origin console), this could be considered a GBA entry due to its initial release. Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with comedic elements and compelling narratives. The first game is exceptional, though later entries also hold merit.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick boasts equally strong writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, players use their abilities to save others while unraveling the mystery of their own demise. This captivating title deserves recognition for its compelling narrative and innovative mechanics.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS title, The World Ends With You is ideally experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS. Its unique gameplay and compelling story make it a must-play.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection compiles all Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all entries are excellent, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the improved button controls replacing the original touch controls. However, all three games in the collection are highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem, Etrian Odyssey III offers a solid Switch adaptation. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest. Despite some minor imperfections, it's a rewarding experience.
