Designing Absolute Batman
In the Absolute Universe, Batman is an imposing figure, characterized by bulging muscles, shoulder spikes, and other enhancements to the classic Batsuit. This design earned its spot on our list of the 10 greatest Batman costumes of all time. Snyder and Dragotta revealed the process behind creating this hulking version of the Dark Knight, emphasizing a Batman who lacks the wealth and resources of his traditional counterpart.
"Scott's initial idea was to go big," Dragotta shared with IGN. "He wanted the biggest Batman we've ever seen. Initially, I drew him quite large, but Scott pushed for even more, saying, 'Nick, let's go bigger.' We ended up with a Batman approaching Hulk-like proportions."
Dragotta elaborated on the design philosophy, stating, "The goal was to make him bold, iconic, and embody the essence of this character. Every element of his suit, from the emblem to the smallest detail, is a weapon. It's not just a utility belt; everything is a tool in this Batman's arsenal, and this will continue to evolve."
For Snyder, size was crucial. He explained, "Traditional Batman's superpower is his immense wealth. Without that, this Batman relies on his physical presence to intimidate. When he arrives, it's not just his fighting skills or detective prowess; it's also his sheer size and the violence he brings to the fight that make him a force to be reckoned with."
Snyder added, "His adversaries believe they're untouchable, often backed by resources he doesn't have. As he faces increasingly formidable foes, his size becomes a statement: 'You think you can't be touched, but I'll prove you wrong.'"
The influence of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns is evident, particularly in a striking splash page in issue #6 that pays homage to Miller's iconic (and surprisingly divisive) Dark Knight Returns cover. Dragotta noted, "Miller and David Mazzucchelli's Batman from Year One have been major influences, not just in drawing but in storytelling. The homage to Dark Knight Returns felt necessary and right."
Giving Batman a Family
Absolute Batman significantly alters the Dark Knight's mythology, notably by revealing that Bruce Wayne's mother, Martha, is alive. This change transforms Batman from a solitary figure into one with a family to protect, adding depth and vulnerability to his character.
Snyder discussed this pivotal decision, stating, "Choosing Martha was about exploring a different dynamic. Bruce's relationship with his father has been explored extensively, but having Martha alive felt fresh and impactful. She became the moral compass of the series, grounding Bruce while also exposing his vulnerabilities."
Snyder continued, "Her presence adds a new dimension to Bruce, making him both stronger and more vulnerable. It's an unpredictable relationship that's become integral to the story."
Another significant change introduced early on is Bruce's childhood friendships with characters who become his rogues gallery in the traditional DC Universe, such as Waylon Jones, Oswald Cobblepot, Harvey Dent, Edward Nygma, and Selina Kyle. Snyder teased that these relationships will play a crucial role in Bruce's development into Batman.
"Without global training, Bruce learns from those around him," Snyder explained. "Oswald teaches him about the underworld, Waylon about fighting, Eddie about logic, Harvey about city politics, and Selina about much more. These relationships are the heart of the series, grounding Bruce and enriching his journey."
Absolute Batman vs. Absolute Black Mask ---------------------------------------In "The Zoo," Absolute Batman asserts his presence in Gotham as new supervillains emerge. The arc focuses on Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, leader of the nihilistic Party Animals gang. Snyder and Dragotta considered introducing a new villain but chose to revamp Black Mask to fit their narrative.
"Black Mask's core concept of nihilism resonated with us," Snyder said. "We wanted a villain who embodied the idea that the world is beyond saving, so let's party while it burns. We transformed him into something fresh while staying true to his crime boss roots."
The climax of issue #6 sees Batman confronting Black Mask on his yacht, delivering a fierce beating while asserting his significance. Although Batman refrains from killing, the fight leaves Black Mask severely injured, symbolizing Batman's underdog status in the Absolute Universe.
Snyder highlighted the importance of these moments, saying, "Batman uses the world's cynicism as fuel. He thrives on proving naysayers wrong, even as he faces doubts about his ability to change things."
The Threat of Absolute Joker
The series builds towards a confrontation with Absolute Joker, who is introduced as Batman's antithesis. Unlike the traditional Joker, this version is wealthy, worldly, and devoid of humor.
"In this inverted system, Batman is the disruptor, and Joker represents the established order," Snyder explained. "Their dynamic is fundamental to the story, even when Joker isn't present."
Snyder hinted at the Joker's evolution, stating, "This Joker is terrifying before meeting Batman, but their relationship will further develop as the series progresses."
Dragotta added, "Joker's power and master plan are hinted at throughout. His storyline is imminent, and we want readers to be intrigued."
What to Expect From Absolute Mr. Freeze and Absolute Bane ---------------------------------------------------------Issues #7 and #8 feature a guest arc by Marcos Martin, introducing Mr. Freeze in a horror-infused reinvention. Snyder praised Martin's emotional storytelling, saying, "These issues explore Bruce's struggle with revealing his identity to his friends and his survival plan. Mr. Freeze mirrors Bruce's journey but takes a darker path."
Snyder emphasized the creative freedom in the Absolute Universe, stating, "We're going dark and taking risks with these villains, creating a unique experience while respecting the main universe's legacy."
Issue #6 also sets up a future confrontation with Bane, a physically imposing villain. Snyder confirmed, "Bane is really big, designed to make Bruce's silhouette look smaller in comparison."
As part of the larger Absolute line, Absolute Batman joins Absolute Wonder Woman and Absolute Superman, with new titles planned for 2025. Snyder hinted at future crossovers, saying, "By 2025, you'll see how these characters begin to interact and influence each other within the Absolute Universe."
