Amazon's Android Appstore is Closing its Doors
Fans of the Amazon Appstore on Android will soon be disappointed. TechCrunch reports Amazon is shutting down its Android app store on August 20th, 2024.
While the Appstore, launched in 2011, has had a surprisingly long run, its closure will impact developers and users. According to Amazon's support page, existing Android apps installed from the store are not guaranteed to receive further updates or support.
However, the Appstore will remain operational on Amazon's Fire TV and Fire Tablets.
The Irony of Amazon's Retreat
The timing is somewhat ironic, as alternative app stores are gaining popularity. Amazon's Appstore never achieved widespread recognition, likely due to a lack of compelling features to attract users and developers. Competitors like the Epic Games Store, with its free games program, offer a more attractive proposition.
This closure serves as a reminder that even large companies can't guarantee long-term support for all ventures.
