Players were also introduced to the new planet, Kairos, a world teeming with warring factions, dangerous wildlife, and desperate inhabitants, all under the rule of the oppressive Timekeeper. The mission is to spark a revolution against this tyrant, engaging with unique factions and enlisting their support. Returning fan-favorite characters such as Claptrap, Moxxi, and Zane will assist players in this epic quest.

The gameplay also showcased new features, including a licensed Parts system that allows players to customize weapon behaviors and abilities, new Gear slots for more specialized builds, the introduction of a new vehicle called the Digirunner, and more exciting elements.

Gearbox Denies Launch Date Change is Influenced by Other Games

Prior to the State of Play, Gearbox Software announced that Borderlands 4's release date had been moved up by two weeks. The studio attributed this change to the "incredible development work" on the game. However, fans speculated about other influences, particularly the possible release timing of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6).

Both Gearbox Software and Rockstar Games, the developers of Borderlands and GTA respectively, are subsidiaries of Take-Two Interactive. This connection fueled fan theories that the date change might be strategic, especially following Take-Two's statements about their release windows.

During Take-Two Interactive's earnings call in November 2024, the company expressed its intention to launch GTA 6 in the Fall of 2025. CEO Strauss Zelnick clarified that this would not conflict with Borderlands 4's planned release within Take-Two's 2026 fiscal year (April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026). In a November 2024 interview with Variety, Zelnick stated, "I think it’s safe to say that we wouldn’t, and no one would, stack up huge releases unnecessarily."

However, Gearbox Entertainment CEO Randy Pitchford took to Twitter (X) on April 30 to refute these speculations. He emphasized that the decision to ship Borderlands 4 early was driven purely by confidence in their product, stating, "Our decision is literally 0% about any other product’s actual or theoretical launch date."

Regardless of the underlying reasons, fans can look forward to experiencing the latest installment in the Borderlands series sooner than anticipated. Borderlands 4 is set to launch on September 12, 2025, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Stay tuned to our site for the latest updates on the game!
