The writer of the Wesley Snipes Blade trilogy, David S. Goyer, has expressed his willingness to assist Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige in reviving the stalled Mahershala Ali-led Blade reboot within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Despite being announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, the project has faced numerous delays and setbacks, leading to its removal from Marvel's release schedule just seven months ago.
Recent comments from individuals involved in the project, such as rapper and artist Flying Lotus, who was set to compose music for the film, and costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who was tasked with designing costumes for a 1920s setting, indicate that the original vision for the film has been abandoned. Actor Delroy Lindo, who was initially cast alongside Ali, also shared his disappointment about the project's derailment, citing a promising start that eventually fell apart.
Despite these challenges, Feige remains committed to bringing Blade to the MCU, emphasizing Marvel's dedication to the character and Mahershala Ali's interpretation of him. In a November 2024 interview with Omelete, Feige assured fans that the studio is still working on finding the right direction for the film and promised that Blade would eventually make it to the screen.
Meanwhile, the success of the MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine, which included a cameo by Wesley Snipes as Blade, has reignited interest in the character. The film grossed $1.3 billion globally, prompting Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds to advocate for a send-off film for Snipes' Blade, similar to Hugh Jackman's Logan. Reynolds credits the original Blade films with paving the way for the superhero genre and the MCU itself, calling Snipes' Blade "Marvel Daddy."
In addition to his advocacy for Snipes' Blade, Reynolds is reportedly in the early stages of developing a Deadpool and X-Men ensemble film, where Deadpool would share the spotlight with other X-Men characters, allowing them to be utilized in novel ways.
