Romance in BG3 Explained:
Every romance option is available regardless of your character's gender. Two types exist: long-term relationships (requiring sustained interaction and approval) and one-night stands. Choosing one romance may lock you out of others. Companion romances significantly alter their storylines.
All Romance Options:
These companions can be pursued for long-term romances:
- Shadowheart
- Gale
- Astarion
- Karlach
- Wyll
- Lae'zel
- Halsin
- Minthara
These non-companion characters offer short-term romances:
- Mizora
- Guardian/Emperor
- Drow Twins
- Haarlep
- Naoise Nallinto
Shadowheart:
- How to Romance: Maintain her approval (kindness, respect) through dialogue choices. In Act I, accept her invitation to share a drink and be affectionate. Continue to support her choices in Acts II and III, culminating in final romantic scenes.
- Special Notes: Jealousy may end the romance if you pursue others.
Gale:
- How to Romance: Rescue him early. Comply with his requests regarding magical items. Be supportive during his Act I magic lesson and Act II's crucial scene with Elminster. In Act III, read "The Annals of Karsus" and choose romantic dialogue options.
- Special Notes: Not open to an open relationship.
Astarion:
- How to Romance: Boost approval with self-serving choices and sarcasm. Allow him to drink your blood. Be attentive during the party and subsequent interactions, particularly regarding his scars. Complete his quest in Act III.
- Special Notes: Most open-minded of the long-term companions regarding other romantic interests.
Karlach:
- How to Romance: Side with her against the Paladins. Obtain Infernal Iron to help repair her heart. Be affectionate during the party and subsequent encounters. Complete her questline in Act III.
- Special Notes: Very jealous; other romances will likely end the relationship.
Wyll:
- How to Romance: Raise approval with heroic actions and support his quests. Be romantic during the party and subsequent interactions. Complete his questline in Act III.
Lae'zel:
- How to Romance: Raise approval through decisive actions and combat. Be assertive in your romantic advances. Continue to support her choices in Acts II and III.
- Special Notes: Not open to multiple partners.
Halsin:

One-Off Romances:
These are short-term encounters with various consequences: Mizora, Guardian/Emperor, Drow Twins, Haarlep, and Naoise Nallinto. Details on how to initiate each are too extensive to include here, but generally involve specific quest completions and dialogue choices. Be aware that pursuing these may impact other relationships.
