Nintendo unveiled all the exciting details about the Switch 2 during its April Direct, and since then, U.S. fans have been eagerly awaiting the chance to preorder. The console's price didn't shock us, but the cost of first-party Switch 2 games at launch certainly raised some eyebrows. Most notably, *Mario Kart World* will set you back a hefty $80 at launch. Additionally, Nintendo is rolling out a new line of Switch 2 accessories, which have seen price hikes compared to the original Switch offerings, with costs rising even further since their initial announcement.
One accessory that caught my attention was the new Switch 2 Pro controller, now priced at a staggering $85. As someone who already owns multiple Switch Pro controllers, I was relieved to learn from Nintendo's developer interview that the original Switch Pro controller will be fully compatible with the Switch 2.

While many might opt for the newer Switch 2 Pro controller, it's not essential for most games. If you already own a Switch Pro controller, you can stick with it and save that $80 for new games. If you're planning to buy the Switch 2 and don't have a Pro controller yet, the standard Switch Pro controller remains a more budget-friendly option at $69.99.
There's a chance these older controllers might sell out before the Switch 2 hits the market to make way for the new model. Amazon currently has limited stock and is mostly offering third-party alternatives. Alongside the compatibility of the regular Switch Pro controller, Nintendo has confirmed that the original Joy-Con controllers will also work with the Switch 2 – though we generally recommend the Switch Pro controller for most gaming needs.
When Will the Switch 2 Pro Controller Be Available?
If the Switch 2 Pro controller is the only accessory you're keen on getting, you'll need to wait until the console's launch day. The new controller will be available starting June 5, alongside the Switch 2. Preorders for the console and its official accessories are expected to begin on April 24. Keep in mind, though, that the Switch 2 Pro controller will only work with the Switch 2, not with the original Switch.
Listings for the Switch 2 Pro controller are already popping up at Walmart and Best Buy, although without a preorder date yet. Walmart also lists upcoming Switch 2 games available for preorder soon.
