A former Toys for Bob concept artist hints at a canceled Crash Bandicoot 5. Read on to uncover details about the project and its cancellation, as revealed by Nicholas Kole.
Another Lost Project: "Project Dragon"
Former Toys for Bob concept artist Nicholas Kole recently revealed on X (formerly Twitter) (July 12th) that a Crash Bandicoot 5 was shelved. The post initially discussed Kole's canceled "Project Dragon," sparking speculation it was a Spyro game. Kole clarified it was an entirely new IP developed with Phoenix Labs. However, he also hinted that a Crash Bandicoot 5 suffered a similar fate, stating, "It is not Spyro, but some day folks will hear about the Crash 5 that never was and it’s gonna break hearts."
Fans reacted with disappointment, highlighting the impact of canceled projects, especially one as anticipated as a new Crash Bandicoot installment.
Earlier this year, Crash developer Toys for Bob transitioned from Activision Blizzard to become an independent studio, following Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Interestingly, Toys for Bob is now partnering with Microsoft Xbox for publishing their next game, though details remain scarce.
The last major Crash Bandicoot release was 2020's Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, a commercial success with over five million copies sold. This was followed by the mobile title Crash Bandicoot: On the Run! (2021) and the multiplayer game Crash Team Rumble (2023), which ended its live service in March 2024.
With Toys for Bob's newfound independence, the possibility of a Crash Bandicoot 5 remains open. However, fans may have to wait and see if the project is revived.
