Elder Scrolls Online Subclasses Come After 11 Long Years of Fans Requesting It

The Elder Scrolls Online has finally introduced a much-anticipated feature that fans have been eagerly awaiting for over a decade: subclasses. This new addition promises to revolutionize gameplay and offers exciting future updates. Let's dive into the details.

Elder Scrolls Online Direct Updates

Over 3000 Combinations of Skill Lines

Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) has announced some thrilling developments during the ESO Direct 2025 event on April 10. One of the most significant updates is the introduction of subclassing, a feature that has been on fans' wishlists for years.

In traditional MMOs, adding new skill trees often means starting from scratch, which can be frustrating. However, Zenimax Online Studios is addressing this issue by introducing subclasses. Once players reach level 50, they can retain one skill line from their base class and swap out two others with skill lines from any of the six available classes. This innovative system opens up over 3000 unique combinations, allowing players to tailor their playstyle like never before.

ESO Game Director Rich Lambert expressed confidence in the new feature, stating that extensive testing has been conducted. He noted that while power levels may increase, the developers are comfortable with the balance achieved.

Seasons of the Worm Cult

Moving forward, ZeniMax Online is adopting a seasonal content model, as announced by Studio Director Matt Firor. This shift aims to introduce more experimental content and better address player feedback. Firor emphasized, "We want to keep telling great stories, but also mix in new ideas and gameplay systems, and that's exactly what we're going to do, but we'll do this in a different cadence, one that allows us, the developers, to broaden our focus and increase variety."

The first chapter in this new seasonal format is "Seasons of the Worm Cult," a continuation of the original Molag Bal storyline. Set on the Isle of Solstice, players will explore this new zone to investigate the resurgence of the Worm Cult. Producer Susan Kath clarified that while "Seasons of the Worm Cult" will span most of the year, future seasons will typically last between 3 to 6 months. The developers also plan to introduce "remix" seasons, revisiting previous storylines, with a Dark Brotherhood-themed season teased for the future.
