Exodus Resurfaces With 'Indiana Jones-Meets-Interstellar'-Type Adventure Vibe in New Trailer | The Game Awards 2025

Even two years after its unveiling at The Game Awards 2023, Archetype Entertainment’s sci-fi action-RPG Exodus remains shrouded in mystery. Set within an original universe from Wizards of the Coast—best known for Dungeons & Dragons—the game centers on the rapid evolution of human and alien civilizations. Players shape the fate of various factions and humanity itself amidst a galactic war, guided by Matthew McConaughey as he portrays a pivotal character essential to the journey.

Before the latest trailer debuted at The Game Awards 2025, players got an early glimpse into how time dilation impacts the narrative, describing the experience as "Indiana Jones meets Interstellar."

"We strive to empower players with significant agency in their actions," explains Chris King, Exodus game director. "Our aim is for them to feel like co-authors of the story rather than passive observers. Regarding Jun’s journey, you make numerous moral decisions that unfold across multiple generations due to time dilation effects."

With sci-fi author Peter F. Hamilton collaborating with Wizards of the Coast on lore and Archetype Entertainment boasting former BioWare developers, Exodus captures the tone and scale beloved in Mass Effect. However, it distinguishes itself by presenting consequences through the lens of time as a constant force.

Set in the Centauri Cluster far in the future, Exodus chronicles humanity’s struggle to survive on Lidon following Earth's collapse. As their new home also begins to crumble, lone scavenger Jun discovers the ability to manipulate artifacts from an advanced alien race known as Celestials. This power offers humanity a fighting chance but requires Jun to face the ripple effects of interstellar time dilation, confronting both positive and negative outcomes in a shifting galaxy.

The newest trailer highlights the stakes driving the main plot: protagonist Jun explores the galaxy with allies, encountering factions transformed by player choices—including humans who have evolved into alien-like species over generations. Like Mass Effect, Exodus emphasizes customization, allowing players to adjust Jun’s appearance and gender to suit their preferred narrative style.

Developer interviews reveal that beyond story decisions, core combat and traversal offer diverse approaches. Players can unleash Jun’s full arsenal of weapons and celestial powers or employ stealth tactics to outmaneuver rivals and complete complex objectives.

Drew Karpyshyn, Exodus narrative director and former BioWare writer for Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, notes that the story tracks Jun’s growth as an explorer wielding ancient alien technology linked to their lineage as a "Traveler."

"You start as a solitary scavenger," says Karpyshyn. "[Jun] is connected to a powerful 'traveler' dynasty with access to unique alien tech. Throughout the game, Jun reclaims this heritage, becoming a champion and leader who ultimately saves humanity’s homeworld. Players will truly connect with Jun’s story upon playing."

Exodus includes diverse companions for battle support, lore enrichment, and romance. One standout is an octopus-like alien piloting a mech suit; while not romanceable, other allies offer deeper relationship opportunities.

Matthew McConaughey remains one of the game's biggest mysteries as C.C. Orlev, a legendary explorer who vanished. Jun interacts with him primarily when most needed. The trailer reveals more of his role—a wise elder archetype—marking McConaughey’s ambitious video game debut.
