Nintendo Switch 2 Features Teased in New Filings

By AlexanderApr 15,2026

New Nintendo patent filings have sparked excitement among fans, hinting at a potential wireless GameCube controller that could be used to play classic GameCube titles through Nintendo Switch Online when the Switch 2 launches.

As reported by Nintendo Life, Nintendo recently submitted an FCC filing for a "game controller" designed for the Switch 2, featuring Bluetooth connectivity.

Investigations by the gaming community (notably Famiboards) suggest that one of the images in the filing shows a label placement identical to the back of a GameCube controller, positioned behind the C-stick.

While this could simply be a revised Switch 2 Pro Controller, speculation is mounting that it may accompany a GameCube lineup on Nintendo Switch Online. The service already offers wireless retro controllers for older systems, so adding GameCube support would make sense.

Fans have long requested GameCube classics on Switch, but Nintendo has so far focused on NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy titles. Could the Switch 2 finally bring these beloved games to the subscription service?

The Switch 2 was first teased earlier this year with a brief trailer confirming backward compatibility and an additional USB-C port. While key details—including the purpose of an unidentified button on the new Joy-Cons—remain unknown, theories suggesting mouse-like functionality gained attention.

Last month, a Nintendo patent suggested the Switch 2’s Joy-Cons could attach upside down, thanks to magnetic connections rather than rails. This could allow flexible button positioning and possibly unlock new gameplay mechanics.

Analysts estimate the Switch 2 could launch for $400, though some speculate it might reach $500. A June release window has been floated.

Nintendo reportedly plans a Direct presentation on April 2, where more Switch 2 details may be announced.

In the meantime, Metroid Prime Remastered remains a fantastic way to revisit GameCube-era greatness on the current Switch.
