Nintendo has unveiled our first detailed look at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, generating excitement as the console's launch approaches next month. In a recent video shared via the Nintendo Today app, we get a glimpse of the official Switch 2 carry case, which features slots for up to six Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2 cartridges.
As previously confirmed, Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same size and shape as their predecessors from the original Switch, ensuring compatibility and allowing the Switch 2 to play games from both console generations through a single cartridge slot. However, a notable distinction lies in the cartridge's color—Switch 2 cartridges are distinctly red. This color choice appears to be standard across all Switch 2 cartridges, not limited to just the Mario Kart World cartridge showcased in the video. The design of the cartridge features a Switch 2 logo on the top of the printed sticker, differentiating it from the original Switch cartridges. The official Switch 2 carrying case is designed to accommodate the console with the Joy-Con 2 attached, along with six cartridges and two Joy-Con 2 straps, making it a versatile accessory for gamers on the go.
Despite the new color and logo, Switch 2 cartridges remain identical to their predecessors in every other aspect, including the infamous foul-tasting coating applied by Nintendo. This coating is designed to prevent accidental ingestion, a precaution emphasized by Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta in a recent interview with GameSpot. "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," Dohta explained. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."
