Nick Frost has shared his initial thoughts on tackling the role of Hagrid in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series, emphasizing his desire to honor the character's legacy while bringing his own unique interpretation to the screen.
The star of *Hot Fuzz* and the live-action *How to Train Your Dragon* revealed he is already deep into pre-production preparations for his portrayal. His goal is to make this version of the beloved Hogwarts groundskeeper distinctive, yet still recognizable and comforting to longtime fans.
"I have enormous respect for what came before me, especially Robbie Coltrane's incredible performance, but I'm not going to try to be Robbie," Frost explained in an interview with Collider.
"I'm aiming to do something not 'different' for the sake of it," he continued. "You have to honor the source material, but within that framework, there's room for subtlety and personal nuances."
The late Robbie Coltrane played Hagrid in all eight original Harry Potter films and is said to have been a direct inspiration for the character in J.K. Rowling's books.
Frost is now set to embody Hagrid for the next decade, as the series plans to adapt each novel into its own dedicated television season.
"I've had the chance to visit some of the sets, and they're growing a Hagrid beard," Frost separately told ScreenRant. It's unclear if this refers to a custom prosthetic beard being crafted for him or an actual beard being grown to be used as part of his makeup.

Last month, the three young actors cast in the iconic central roles were announced, featuring newcomers Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
"As a father myself, I'm going to feel very protective of these kids," Frost said of the young trio. "And I think that's one of the foundational elements of Hagrid's relationship with them—he is fiercely protective. I honestly can't wait to explore that dynamic."
Other confirmed cast members include John Lithgow (known for *Conclave* and *Dexter*) in the pivotal role of Albus Dumbledore, with Paapa Essiedu (*I May Destroy You*, *Black Mirror*) taking on the part of Severus Snape.

Janet McTeer (*Me Before You*, *The Menu*) will portray Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thallon (*The Favourite*, *Present Laughter*) is set as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse (*The Fast Show*, *Alice Through the Looking Glass*) will play the long-suffering caretaker Argus Filch.
"I've always read Hagrid as a lovable, somewhat lost, occasionally volatile, funny, and incredibly warm-hearted child in a giant's body," Frost concluded. "The beauty of adapting one book per season is that I'll get to explore those layers much more deeply. I can't wait. He's funny! I want to capture his humor, his cheekiness, his fears, his protectiveness, and that childlike quality. That's the heart of my approach."
Production on the first season of the Harry Potter TV series is scheduled to begin this year, with a planned premiere on HBO in early 2027.
