John Lithgow Reveals He'll Play Dumbledore in HBO's Harry Potter TV Series

By AllisonMar 01,2025

HBO's highly anticipated Harry Potter TV series has reportedly secured its Dumbledore: the acclaimed John Lithgow. While HBO and Warner Bros. haven't officially confirmed the casting, Lithgow himself revealed in a ScreenRant interview that he's accepted the role, describing it as a pivotal moment in his career. He stated the part will "define the last chapter of [his] life," adding that he'll be around 87 by the time filming wraps.

This marks the first confirmed casting for the series, which aims to re-adapt J.K. Rowling's books with a completely new ensemble. Rowling will serve as an executive producer alongside Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts.

The lack of a complete cast suggests the show is still in the early stages of development, some time away from production. Lithgow, a veteran actor known for roles like Dick Solomon in "3rd Rock from the Sun" and Winston Churchill in "The Crown" (for which he won an Emmy), brings considerable experience and prestige to the project. His casting, even unofficially confirmed, generates significant excitement for the upcoming adaptation.
