Keanu Reeves Unhappy with Constantine 2 Scripts: Co-Star Warns Against Marvel-Style Transformation

By PenelopeJun 16,2025

Keanu Reeves fans have long awaited news of a sequel to the 2005 cult favorite *Constantine*, and while there’s been talk of a follow-up for years, recent comments from co-star Peter Stormare suggest that progress has stalled due to creative differences — particularly with Reeves himself.

In a recent interview with *The Direct*, Stormare revealed that Keanu Reeves has reportedly been unimpressed with the various scripts presented during development. “There's a lot of back and forth, because... I think Keanu is not so happy with the scripts,” Stormare explained. He went on to note that while the original film wasn’t an immediate box office hit, it eventually gained traction and became a beloved cult classic. Now, studios seem eager to go bigger — something Reeves isn't necessarily on board with.

Stormare, who portrayed Lucifer in the first film and is expected to reprise his role, shared insights into Reeves’ vision for the sequel. According to him, Reeves prefers to keep the tone grounded and spiritually eerie, much like the original, rather than turning it into an over-the-top action spectacle. “And I think Keanu says, 'I've done *John Wick*. This movie is spiritual. It's about demons and regular people. And I wanted to keep it that way.'”

Reeves Resists Turning Constantine Into a Superhero Spectacle

It seems Reeves is especially wary of the studio pushing for a blockbuster-style approach, similar to Marvel or other large-scale comic book adaptations. While *Constantine* draws from DC/Vertigo comics, Reeves appears to want to preserve its dark, introspective atmosphere instead of transforming it into a high-flying action-packed franchise.

Stormare echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the original film succeeded precisely because of its unique tone. “It took a long time for [the original] to become a cult movie. It really worked, and it will work on the audience again,” he said. “You don't have to add a lot of action and shootouts. You have other movies. Don't turn it into big Marvel... Don't bring in the big guns. Let it be.”

What’s Next for the Constantine Sequel?

Francis Lawrence, who directed the original film, is set to return for the sequel, but no official production timeline has been announced. With script disagreements still at play and a desire to maintain the essence of what made the first film special, fans may need to wait a bit longer before seeing John Constantine return to the big screen.
