NetEase's Marvel Rivals mistakenly bans legitimate players. The developer, NetEase, issued a public apology for incorrectly banning numerous innocent players while attempting to eliminate cheaters. The affected players, primarily using Steam Deck, Mac, and Linux systems via compatibility layers, were wrongly flagged as cheaters. The bans have since been lifted.
The incident highlights the challenges of anti-cheat systems and their compatibility with non-Windows platforms. NetEase's statement acknowledged the problem, apologized for the inconvenience, and encouraged players to report actual cheating. The company also stated that wrongly banned players can appeal. Proton, the SteamOS compatibility layer, is known for triggering anti-cheat software.
Separately, the Marvel Rivals community is calling for the implementation of in-game character bans across all ranks. Currently, this feature is only available at Diamond rank and above. Players argue that extending this mechanic to lower ranks would improve gameplay balance, encourage strategic diversity, and provide a more enjoyable experience for all players. NetEase has yet to publicly address this request.
