Marvel Rivals has found itself at the center of a heated controversy after receiving over 500 mods in just one month. The situation escalated when Nexus Mods, a popular modding platform, decided to remove modifications that replaced Captain America's head with images of Joe Biden and Donald Trump. This decision stirred strong emotions among users.
The owner of Nexus Mods, known by the pseudonym TheDarkOne, explained the rationale behind the removal in a private Reddit discussion. He stressed that both the Trump and Biden mods were taken down simultaneously to prevent any accusations of political bias. "We removed the Biden mod on the same day as the Trump mod to avoid bias. But for some reason, YouTube bloggers are silent about it," TheDarkOne noted.
However, the controversy didn't end with the removal of the mods. TheDarkOne revealed that following the decision, he began receiving death threats and was subjected to various insults, including being called a pedophile. "Today we write death threats, call us pedophiles and all sorts of insults just because someone decided to stir up this topic," he added.
This incident is not the first time Nexus Mods has faced backlash over mod removals. In 2022, the platform removed a mod for Spider-Man Remastered that replaced rainbow flags with American flags. At the time, the site's owners openly declared their support for inclusivity and their intention to remove content that goes against diversity.
In response to the ongoing controversy, TheDarkOne concluded, "We're not going to waste our time on people who think this is cause for uproar."
