Marvel Comics is set to relaunch its flagship Star Wars series in May 2025, taking fans on a thrilling journey set after the Battle of Jakku and the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War. This new series will delve into the efforts of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa as they strive to establish the New Republic and restore order amidst a galaxy in turmoil.
The series, penned by acclaimed writer Alex Segura, who previously worked on the Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku miniseries, will be brought to life with illustrations by Star Wars veteran Phil Noto, known for his work on Star Wars: Poe Dameron. Both Noto and Leinil Yu will provide captivating covers for the first issue.
Set approximately two years after the events depicted in Return of the Jedi, Segura and Noto's Star Wars series will explore the aftermath of the last major confrontation between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance at the Battle of Jakku. As the New Republic endeavors to solidify its position as the new governing power in the galaxy, Luke and his companions will encounter new challenges. Opportunistic pirates, thieves, and other villains are poised to exploit the power vacuum left by the war's end.
“Now that we've put the period at the end of the Galactic Civil War with the Battle of Jakku, we can speed ahead into a new, uncharted era, with some new galactic threats, foes, and mysteries for our beloved heroes to grapple with, blending the familiar with the new and shocking,” Segura shared with StarWars.com. “These stories will be packed with action and the character moments Star Wars fans have come to expect, featuring twists on the galaxy and landscape we know, with an eye toward making sure people can jump in easily and with any issue. We can't wait."
Noto expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Alex is an amazing writer and has come up with some great storylines and new characters for this series and I’m thrilled for the opportunity to bring them to life on the page! It’s also been exciting to draw the classic characters in the post-Return of the Jedi era because there’s no existing film or TV versions of them. I get to create new looks for them while also having reference of the actors from the 80s to help sell the look of this timeline.”
Star Wars #1 is slated for release on May 7, 2025, perfectly timed to coincide with this year's Star Wars Day celebrations.
This new series won't be the only Star Wars comic set post-Return of the Jedi from Marvel. In February, the publisher will launch Star Wars: Legacy of Vader, which will delve into Kylo Ren's journey following the events of The Last Jedi.
