Michael Douglas Unlikely to Return as Hank Pym in Ant-Man

By SadieMay 27,2025

Michael Douglas, the acclaimed actor known for portraying Hank Pym in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has hinted that he might be finished with the franchise. Douglas has graced the screen as the shrinking scientist in four films, including all three Ant-Man movies and a cameo in Avengers: Endgame. His most recent appearance was in the critically underwhelming 2023 film, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

With the production of Avengers: Doomsday underway, fans are wondering if they'll see Hank Pym return. However, Douglas seems to have put those hopes to rest. In an interview with Deadline, he expressed his doubts about returning for another Marvel project, stating, "I don't think so. I had the experience, and I was excited to do it."

Having largely retired from acting, Douglas's recent big-screen appearances have been limited to Marvel projects. Despite stepping back from the spotlight, he remains active as a producer, with over a dozen credits to his name. Reflecting on his time with Marvel, Douglas shared, "I'd never done a green screen picture before. But I'm enjoying my hiatus and enjoying my life. It was overwhelming running the production company and acting at the same time."

Douglas had previously expressed a desire for Hank Pym to be killed off in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, believing it would enhance the stakes for Paul Rudd's Ant-Man and provide closure to Pym's storyline. However, Marvel opted against this direction.

The Most Surprising Avengers and Marvel Characters Not Announced for Doomsday

View 12 ImagesThe lukewarm reception to Quantumania has cast doubt on the future of the Ant-Man series, though Paul Rudd is set to reprise his role in Avengers: Doomsday. As for the rest of the Ant-Man family, including Hank Pym, Michelle Pfeiffer's Janet Van Dyne, and Evangeline Lilly's Hope Van Dyne, their return seems unlikely. In June 2024, Lilly announced her departure from acting to focus on her family, further diminishing the chances of Wasp appearing in Avengers: Doomsday.

While the full cast and plot details of Avengers: Doomsday remain under wraps, recent leaks from the film's set have revealed a surprising return of a location from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, sparking excitement and speculation among fans.
