Monster Hunter Wilds' phenomenal success shows no sign of slowing down, having just breezed past the 10 million units sold mark and setting a new record for developer and publisher Capcom.
This represents a first-month sales record for Capcom. No game in the company's history has sold more in its initial month. Wilds was already the fastest-selling title in Capcom's catalog, having sold 8 million copies within just three days.
In a press statement, Capcom explained its view on why Monster Hunter Wilds has proven so successful, even outperforming the acclaimed Monster Hunter World. The company pointed to the introduction of crossplay and a simultaneous day-one launch across console and PC (World launched on PC half a year after consoles) as key factors in Wilds' broad appeal.
"By introducing crossplay—a first for the series—and launching simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, the game creates an environment where a much wider range of players can enjoy the hunt together," Capcom explained.
"Additionally, new features like the Focus Mode mechanic and seamless transitions between settlements and ecosystems deliver a more immersive experience. Blending these numerous new elements with the core Monster Hunter appeal has generated significant excitement, leading to this unprecedented first-month sales record of over 10 million units."
As announced last week, Monster Hunter Wilds Title Update 1 launches on April 4. It introduces a fan-favorite monster as well as the Grand Hub, a new in-game settlement for player gatherings and communication. Title Update 2, which Capcom has teased will add the Lagiacrus, is scheduled for this summer. The Monster Hunter series previously made a massive impact in Western markets with the 2018 launch of World, which remains Capcom's best-selling game ever at 21.3 million copies sold. However, it now seems likely that Wilds will eventually surpass even that monumental figure.
