MultiVersus to Shut Down After Season 5
Warner Bros. Games has announced the upcoming closure of MultiVersus. The popular platform fighter will end its run on May 30th, 2025, following the conclusion of its fifth and final season.
MultiVersus Season 5: A Final Farewell
On January 31st, 2025, the official MultiVersus Twitter (now X) account revealed the game's impending shutdown. A blog post on the official website confirmed that Season 5, launching February 4th, 2025, will be the game's last. This final season will introduce two highly anticipated characters: Aquaman from DC Comics and Lola Bunny from Looney Tunes. Both characters, along with all other Season 5 content, will be unlockable through gameplay. Following the season's end, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. No official reason for the shutdown has been given.
Offline Play Option
While online servers will be going offline, players can still enjoy MultiVersus in offline mode. This feature, accessible via local gameplay, allows solo play against AI or multiplayer matches with up to three friends. To access this offline mode, players must download the latest version of the game between February 4th, 9 AM PST, and May 30th, 9 AM PDT. Upon logging in, a local save file will be created, preserving all earned and purchased content linked to the player's account.
End of Transactions and Gleamium
All real-money transactions ceased on January 31st, 2025. Players still possessing Gleamium, the in-game premium currency, can continue to use it until the end of Season 5.
A Short but Memorable Run
MultiVersus initially launched in public beta in July 2022, quickly gaining popularity as a free-to-play platform fighter. A relaunch in May 2024 introduced significant updates, including new characters, rollback netcode, a PvE mode, and revised currency systems. Despite these improvements, the game faced ongoing challenges, including technical issues, frequent disconnections, and player concerns regarding microtransactions. Reports in July 2024 indicated a significant drop in player numbers on PlayStation consoles.
MultiVersus will conclude its run with 35 playable characters from various franchises. The developers expressed gratitude for the community's support throughout the game's lifecycle. The game will remain available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30th, 2025, at 9 AM PDT.
