Naughty Dog President Debunks The Last of Us Part 3 Rumors

By RyanJul 08,2025

The future of *The Last of Us* video game series appears to be at a standstill, with Naughty Dog president Neil Druckmann casting serious doubt over the possibility of a third installment. In a recent interview with Variety on March 5, 2025, Druckmann was asked about the potential for *The Last of Us 3*. His response left little room for optimism: “I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.”

This statement has sparked concern among fans who have long hoped for another chapter in the critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic saga. With *The Last of Us 2* delivering what many consider a conclusive ending, and Druckmann’s reluctance to confirm further entries, it seems unlikely that the franchise will continue in its current form.

The Last of Us Might Not Get Another Sequel

Druckmann has previously expressed his philosophy on sequel development, stating during the DICE Summit 2025 that he avoids thinking too far ahead while working on a title. He explained, “I think you're jinxing yourself if you're starting to think about the sequel when you're working on the first game.” While ideas may occasionally surface, he prefers focusing entirely on the project at hand rather than reserving concepts for future games.

Despite this apparent closure for the gaming side of *The Last of Us*, fans can still look forward to season two of the HBO TV adaptation, set to premiere on April 13, 2025. The show continues to expand the universe and maintain engagement with the characters and themes that made the original game so impactful.

While *The Last of Us* may not be getting new games anytime soon, Naughty Dog has shifted its focus toward an ambitious new intellectual property. During The Game Awards 2024, the studio announced *Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet*, a sci-fi narrative-driven experience designed exclusively for PlayStation 5.

A teaser trailer revealed a visually rich world filled with futuristic elements and complex storytelling. According to the game's official website, development has been ongoing since 2020, positioning it as one of Naughty Dog’s most daring and imaginative projects to date. Although details remain scarce, anticipation is building around what promises to be a groundbreaking entry in the studio’s portfolio.

The Last of Us Online Cancelled To Make Way For Intergalactic

Previously, rumors circulated regarding the cancellation of *The Last of Us Online*, which Naughty Dog had initially intended to develop alongside its single-player titles. It was later confirmed that the multiplayer spin-off was shelved to allow full creative resources to be directed toward *Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet*.

In a February 19, 2025 interview with the Sacred Symbols+ podcast, former Sony Interactive Entertainment President Shuhei Yoshida shared insights into the decision-making process. He noted that Bungie, creators of *Destiny*, advised Sony executives on the complexities of live-service games—highlighting that these titles require long-term commitment beyond initial development.

Yoshida elaborated, “The idea for *The Last of Us Online* came from Naughty Dog and they really wanted to make it.” However, after understanding the demands of maintaining such a game, Naughty Dog ultimately decided against moving forward. Yoshida added, “Bungie explained what it takes to make live-service games, and Naughty Dog realized, ‘Oops, we can't do that! If we do it, we can't make *Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.*’ So that was a lack of foresight.”
