NCSoft Scraps Horizon MMORPG "Project H"
NCSoft's ambitious Horizon MMORPG, codenamed "H," has been canceled, according to a January 13, 2025 report by South Korean news outlet MTN. The cancellation follows a company-wide "feasibility review" resulting in the termination of several projects. The report also indicates that key developers assigned to "Project H" have departed NCSoft, with remaining team members reassigned to other projects. The removal of "Project H" (and another project, codenamed "J") from NCSoft's organizational chart further confirms the cancellation.
While NCSoft and Sony have yet to officially comment, the news raises questions about the future of the Horizon MMORPG concept. The possibility of another developer picking up the project remains uncertain.
Guerrilla Games' Separate Horizon Online Project Remains Active
Separately, Guerrilla Games continues development on a distinct Horizon online project, internally referred to as the "Online Project." This project, confirmed in a December 2022 Twitter (X) post, is being developed independently of NCSoft and features a new cast of characters and a unique visual style.
Recent job postings, including one for a Senior Platform Engineer in January 2025, suggest a large-scale online experience is planned, potentially targeting over one million players. This indicates a significant investment in the project, though details remain scarce.
Sony and NCSoft's Strategic Partnership
The cancellation of "Project H" comes amidst the backdrop of Sony Interactive Entertainment's (SIE) newly formed strategic partnership with NCSoft, announced November 28, 2023. This collaboration aims to leverage NCSoft's technological expertise and Sony's global reach to expand into new gaming markets. While "Project H" is no longer in development, this partnership opens the door for future collaborations between the two companies, potentially bringing other Sony titles to mobile platforms.
