Pokémon Go creator Niantic is reportedly nearing discussions to sell its video game division to Scopely, a mobile gaming company owned by Saudi-based Savvy Games Group, in a deal valued at approximately $3.5 billion. According to initial reports from Bloomberg, the transaction would likely encompass Pokémon Go, the popular augmented reality mobile game that encourages players to explore the real world to capture virtual creatures.
A confidential source informed Bloomberg that although the deal is still under negotiation and not finalized, it could be officially announced within a few weeks if approved. Neither Niantic, Scopely, nor Savvy Games Group has made any public statements regarding the rumored acquisition.
Savvy Games Group acquired Scopely in April 2023 for $4.9 billion, following Saudi Arabia's announcement of plans to purchase a prominent games publisher. Scopely specializes in developing successful mobile titles such as The Walking Dead: Road to Survival, Stumble Guys, Marvel Strike Force, and Monopoly Go.
In 2022, Savvy Gaming Group also acquired two major esports organizations, ESL and FACEIT, for a combined $1.5 billion. At the time, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman emphasized the kingdom's goal to establish itself as a global leader in the gaming and esports industries by 2030. He highlighted the initiative's role in diversifying the Saudi economy and fostering innovation within the sector.
