The Nintendo Switch 2: A Size Comparison
Early glimpses of the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal a larger console than its predecessor. This size increase, evident in the announcement trailer, suggests a shift away from compact handhelds towards larger portable devices like the Steam Deck. While official dimensions remain undisclosed, we can offer estimations based on a CES 2025 Switch 2 mockup by peripheral designer Genki, remarkably similar to the console shown in the trailer.
Switch 2 Screen Size:
Our estimations point to an 8-inch screen (diagonal measurement, excluding bezels), aligning with earlier rumors. This translates to approximately 177mm wide and 99mm tall. This represents a nearly 30% diagonal increase and a 66% larger area compared to the original Switch's 6.2-inch screen. The Switch Lite's 5.5-inch screen is 45% smaller diagonally and 111% smaller in area, while the Switch OLED's 7-inch display is 14% smaller diagonally and 30% smaller in area. Even compared to the Steam Deck's 7-inch and 7.4-inch (OLED) screens, the Switch 2's screen is larger, exceeding the Steam Deck OLED by 8% diagonally and 11% in area.
Overall Console Size:
The larger screen necessitates a larger console. Our measurements of the Genki mockup suggest the Switch 2 is approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall, a 25% increase compared to the original Switch (239mm x 102mm). It's 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) but roughly 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm). Thickness is estimated to be similar to the original Switch.
Joy-Con Size:
The trailer suggests the Joy-Cons maintain similar width but increased height. Our estimations suggest 32mm wide and 115mm tall, a 13% increase over the originals.
Screen Unit Size:
Subtracting the Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate the Switch 2 screen unit at 200mm long and 115mm tall, a 31% increase over the original. This allows for relatively slim bezels.
Disclaimer: These are estimations based on the Genki mockup and trailer analysis. Official dimensions may differ. However, we are confident these figures provide a reasonable approximation of the Switch 2's size.
