The development of The Outer Worlds 2 is making significant strides forward, as confirmed by Obsidian Entertainment's CEO, Feargus Urquhart. Amidst a bustling period of game development, including their eagerly awaited fantasy RPG Avowed, Urquhart shared encouraging updates about the progress of the sequel to the beloved space action RPG.
Obsidian Entertainment's Confidence in Upcoming Titles
In a recent interview with Limit Break Network on YouTube, Urquhart expressed his satisfaction with the development team behind The Outer Worlds 2. "I'm impressed with the team," he stated, emphasizing the expertise and dedication of the developers, many of whom contributed to the original game and have long tenures at Obsidian. "We have a lot of people on that game that get it—who have worked on the first one and have been with us for a long time. So I've actually been really impressed by it."
Urquhart openly discussed the challenges faced by the studio, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic and following their acquisition by Microsoft. At one point, Obsidian was stretched thin, juggling multiple projects including Grounded and Pentiment. "We were kind of a crappy developer for about a year, year and a half," Urquhart admitted candidly. There were even considerations of halting The Outer Worlds 2 to focus resources on Avowed. However, the studio ultimately decided to persevere with all their projects.
Reflecting on the hectic period, Urquhart noted the successful outcomes of Grounded and Pentiment, and expressed optimism about Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2. "We got acquired [in 2018], and we were figuring out how to be acquired, and then Covid happens, and we're trying to get Outer Worlds done, and we're trying to get the DLC done, and we're trying to move Avowed forward, and we want to start again on Outer Worlds 2, get Outer Worlds 2 moving, and Grounded moving, and Josh is working on Pentiment," he recounted.
Despite the challenges, Urquhart is confident in the studio's ability to deliver high-quality games. He acknowledged potential delays similar to those experienced with Avowed, which has been postponed to 2025. "We will get there with all these games," he affirmed. "Are they going to be on the timelines that we originally thought? No. But we're going to get there, and I think that's been proven now." Both The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed are slated for release on PC and Xbox Series S/X.
Since its announcement in 2021, updates on The Outer Worlds 2 have been scarce, but Urquhart's recent comments offer reassurance to fans eagerly awaiting the sequel. With Obsidian's track record and commitment to their projects, the gaming community can look forward to exciting new adventures in the worlds crafted by this talented studio.
