Pokémon TCG Launch Faces Scalping, Shortages, and Outages Again

By GabrielMay 21,2025

The latest Pokémon TCG set, Scarlet & Violet - Destined Rivals, has been fully unveiled, and pre-orders are now underway. As seasoned collectors might anticipate, the launch has been tumultuous, with scalpers and store issues already affecting the new set's availability.

Unveiled on March 24, Scarlet & Violet - Destined Rivals is set to launch on May 30, 2025. Several factors contribute to its high demand. Notably, it marks the return of Trainer's Pokémon cards, a beloved archetype for those who remember classics like Brock's Sandslash or Rocket's Mewtwo. These cards uniquely integrate iconic Trainers with their Pokémon in exciting ways. Furthermore, the set revolves around Team Rocket, adding to its allure and echoing the popularity of earlier sets like Prismatic Evolutions with its Eevee-lutions.

When pre-orders opened, the expected chaos ensued. Fans attempting to secure an Elite Trainer Box (ETB) from the Pokémon Center website were met with long waits and frustration. The ETB, a popular choice for enthusiasts eager to dive into a new set, became a hot commodity.

Scalpers quickly took to platforms like eBay, listing pre-orders of the Pokémon Center-specific ETB at several hundred dollars, far above its usual $54.99 price tag. This practice drew sharp criticism from the community, including Serebii's Joe Merrick, who expressed his dismay at the financialization of the hobby. "I truly hate this," Merrick stated. "The way almost all Pokémon TCG content has shifted to financial. The way that people just treat it as investment. The way people just want to flip it. It's disgusting. Shame on all involved."

This scenario is, unfortunately, not uncommon. Previous sets like Prismatic Evolutions and Blooming Waters 151 also faced rapid sell-outs and shortages. The Pokémon Company (TPC) has acknowledged the issue, stating in an online FAQ (via PokéBeach) that more inventory of the Destined Rivals ETB will be available later this year.

Compounding the scalping problem, some buyers have reported their ETB orders being cancelled. The overwhelming demand and popularity of the Pokémon TCG are undeniable, yet they are also overshadowing the enjoyment of the hobby for many who simply wish to open packs or engage in matches.

While Pokémon TCG Pocket provides a digital alternative to the physical card scarcity, the frustration for those wanting to enjoy the traditional experience remains palpable. A visit to your local store's card aisle likely illustrates the difficulty in obtaining packs. These exciting releases only amplify the disappointment. Hopefully, solutions to these issues will be forthcoming.
