Exciting news for Power Rangers fans: a live-action series is reportedly in the works for Disney+. According to The Wrap, the showrunners behind the upcoming Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, are in discussions to write, showrun, and produce this new Power Rangers project in collaboration with 20th Century TV. The aim, as stated by The Wrap, is to breathe new life into the franchise, captivating both a new audience and the loyal fanbase that has followed the series for decades.
The Power Rangers franchise, known for its iconic '90s TV show The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, captured the hearts of a generation of kids with its teenage superheroes and their formidable mechs that could combine into a giant robot. This beloved series has been a staple in pop culture, inspiring countless fans around the world.
In 2018, Hasbro made a significant move by acquiring the Power Rangers franchise along with other brands from Saban Properties in a deal valued at $522 million. At the time, Hasbro's chairman and CEO, Brian Goldner, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, highlighting the "tremendous upside potential" of the Power Rangers brand. He envisioned expanding the franchise across toys, games, consumer products, digital gaming, and entertainment, with a global reach.
This acquisition followed the unsuccessful 2017 movie reboot, which attempted to give Power Rangers a darker, more mature edge in hopes of launching a series of sequels. However, due to underwhelming box office results, these plans were abandoned, leading Saban to sell the rights to Hasbro shortly thereafter.
Hasbro's ambitious plans don't stop with Power Rangers. They are also developing a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series titled The Forgotten Realms for Netflix, an animated Magic: The Gathering series also set for Netflix, and a cinematic universe centered around Magic: The Gathering. These projects showcase Hasbro's commitment to expanding its iconic brands across various media platforms.
