This came as a shock to fans, as the game was only opened for wishlisting on Steam on April 1, with its first gameplay teaser released on April 2. Although the game was first teased in 2022, it wasn't until late 2024 that Jagex opened signups for alpha testing of a new survival game within the RuneScape universe. The game was officially unveiled as RuneScape: Dragonwilds on March 31, 2025.

Developers at Jagex are eyeing an early 2026 release for Dragonwilds. They emphasize their commitment to delivering a polished, enjoyable experience, stating, "We want to spend the time to get everything right to make sure that our players get a complete, satisfying experience that you’ll want to revisit with friends again and again."
Jagex's Executive Producer, Jesse America, highlighted that Dragonwilds offers a fresh take on the RuneScape universe, designed to captivate both long-time fans and newcomers. Early Access Roadmap Revealed
Jagex has shared an exciting roadmap for Dragonwilds' early access phase, outlining the future updates players can anticipate. A highlight is the introduction of a new region, Fellhollow, which exists in a limbo between life and death. Governed by the soul-eater dragon Imaru, this region is influenced by the wild anima of Ashenfall and the cursed energy of the Underworld. Players will be joined by the iconic RuneScape character, Death, in their exploration of this new area.
Expect new quests, lore, gear, and music, along with enhanced skills in magic, ranged, and farming. The game will also introduce new Lesser Dragons as enemies, dragon slayer gear, and both a hardcore and creative mode. While specific release dates for these updates haven't been set, Jagex promises continuous improvements throughout the early access period.
