Scarlett Johansson Slams Oscars for Ignoring Avengers: Endgame: 'An Impossible Film'

By SophiaJun 21,2025

Scarlett Johansson, an actress with two well-earned Academy Award nominations, recently expressed her surprise over the fact that *Avengers: Endgame* received only a single Oscar nomination—for visual effects—despite its monumental success and cultural impact. In a recent conversation with *Vanity Fair*, she questioned how such a groundbreaking film could be overlooked by the Academy.

“How did this film not get nominated for an Oscar?” Johansson asked, reflecting on the 2019 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) phenomenon. “It was an impossible movie that should not have worked, yet it truly works as a film—and let’s not forget, it’s one of the most successful movies in box office history.”

Avengers: Endgame is widely praised as one of the standout entries in the MCU catalog. Yet, the Oscars have historically been reluctant to recognize superhero or genre films in major categories like Best Picture, Best Director, or acting honors. To date, the only Marvel film to receive a Best Picture nomination remains *Black Panther*, which made history at the 2019 Academy Awards.

Still, Johansson’s portrayal of Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow has been consistently lauded throughout her decade-long run in the MCU—from her debut in *Iron Man* (2008) to her emotional send-off in *Endgame*. Her performance was arguably one of the most nuanced and emotionally resonant arcs in the franchise.

Despite the possibility of revisiting the character in some form, Johansson told *Vanity Fair* that returning to the MCU wouldn’t make sense for her or for Romanoff’s story.

“It would be very hard for me to understand in what capacity [returning] would make sense for me, or for the character that I play,” she explained.

While she admitted missing the camaraderie of her fellow cast members, Johansson emphasized that Natasha’s arc had reached a meaningful conclusion. “I miss my buddies and really would love to be with them forever, but what works about the character is that her story is complete. I don’t want to mess with that—especially for the fans, who deserve closure just as much as we do.”

Following her character’s death in *Endgame*, Johansson reprised the role one final time in the prequel film *Black Widow* (2021), which explored Natasha’s past and also marked her first executive producing credit within the MCU. The film offered a fitting farewell to the character while expanding on her origins and unresolved conflicts.
