Zach Braff Returns for ABC's Scrubs Reboot

By GraceOct 20,2025

In television, revivals are thriving, with iconic shows like The Office and Buffy the Vampire Slayer sparking new projects. Now, the cherished 2000s hospital comedy Scrubs is set for a comeback.

Twenty-four years after Zach Braff first portrayed young doctor JD at Sacred Heart Hospital, he’s confirmed to reprise the role in ABC’s upcoming Scrubs reboot, blending fresh talent with familiar faces.

A similar approach was attempted in Scrubs’ ninth season, which introduced a younger cast alongside Braff and other originals. That effort faltered, ending after just nine episodes.

Nearly two decades later, ABC is giving it another shot. Series creator Bill Lawrence is leading the charge, crafting a hybrid reboot and revival.

With Braff on board, Entertainment Weekly suggests more original cast members may join.

“We’ve discussed this extensively, and the motivation is twofold,” Lawrence shared with Deadline.

“First, fans want to revisit the medical world with characters they love. Second, the show’s heart comes from young, idealistic doctors entering the field with a sense of purpose.”

Scrubs ran for 182 episodes from 2001 to 2010. Production details for the new episodes remain undisclosed.
