Stellar Blade, initially launched as a PlayStation exclusive in April, is set to make its way to PC in 2025. Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming PC release of this highly anticipated sci-fi action game.
Stellar Blade is Coming to PC in 2025
Stellar Blade’s PC Release Could Potentially Require PSN
Rumors of a PC version of Stellar Blade began circulating in June following comments from SHIFT UP CFO Jaewoo Ahn during the company's IPO press conference. Ahn mentioned that they were "currently looking at a PC version of Stellar Blade," suggesting it as a way to further monetize the IP. Today, SHIFT UP has officially announced that Stellar Blade will indeed be coming to PC in 2025.
This decision was influenced by questions from investors about "platform expansion" during SHIFT UP's latest financial earnings report. The developers cited the growing popularity of PC gaming, particularly on platforms like Steam, and the global success of similar titles like Black Myth: Wukong, as factors driving their expectation of strong PC performance.
Although a specific release date has not been announced, SHIFT UP is committed to maintaining the IP's popularity through various strategies. This includes a collaboration DLC with Platinum Game's NieR: Automata and the introduction of a Photo Mode, both set to launch on November 20. Additionally, ongoing marketing activities are planned to keep the game in the spotlight.
Stellar Blade's move to PC follows a trend of high-profile PlayStation exclusives expanding to the platform, including titles like God of War Ragnarök and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. However, this expansion comes with a potential caveat.
As a game published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and with SHIFT UP becoming a second-party developer for Sony in 2023, Stellar Blade may require players to link their Steam accounts to their PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts. This requirement could prevent players in over 170 countries without access to PSN from enjoying the game on PC.
Sony's rationale for this policy, as explained by Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki, is to ensure a "safe" gaming experience, particularly for live-service games. However, this justification is less clear for single-player titles like the Horizon series, which also face similar restrictions.
It's still unclear whether Stellar Blade will mandate a PSN account for PC players. Since SHIFT UP retains ownership of the IP, there's a chance this requirement might not apply. However, if it does, it could impact the game's potential to "exceed [sales] on consoles," as SHIFT UP has projected in their recent financial report.
