Developers Wanted To Honor The Originals
The dedication to crafting a top-quality remaster of Suikoden 1 and 2 took five years, as the developers aimed to stay true to the originals. In a recent interview with Dengeki Online on March 4, 2025, the team behind Suikoden I & II HD Remaster (Suikoden 1 and 2 HDR) detailed their journey in remastering the beloved series.
Originally announced in 2022 with a planned release in 2023, the project faced delays and is now set to launch this year. Suikoden Gensho series IP and Game Director Takahiro Sakiyama explained that the team's thorough debugging process at the end of development necessitated a review, leading to the postponement of the initial release date.
Suikoden 1 and 2 HDR Game Director Tatsuya Ogushi emphasized the team's methodical approach, stating, "We began by understanding the situation. After discussions with Sakiyama about the quality standards, it became evident that numerous aspects required refinement, and we needed to address them diligently."
Reviving the Series
The remaster is not merely a standalone project but a crucial step in revitalizing the Suikoden franchise. Suikoden series Producer Rui Naito shared his vision for the series' future, emphasizing the importance of this initial step in reviving the IP.
Naito communicated this vision to the production team, stating, "The most critical aspect was ensuring that this was a solid first step in bringing back the Suikoden IP. We couldn't afford to falter here. The directive was to 'make it solid.'" He further stressed, "For Suikoden I & II HDR, I instructed Sakiyama and his team to 'create something robust' because launching a half-hearted project at the outset could jeopardize the entire revival effort."
