Patent Reveals Mouse Support in New Joy-Con Design

Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Hints at Possible Mouse Support Functionality

The upcoming Switch 2 controller may include mouse support among its new features, according to a patent published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on February 6, 2025. Nintendo filed this patent for the Switch 2 Joy-Con controllers.

The publication details various functionalities of the new controller, with particular emphasis on its mouse-like capabilities. This follows the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which briefly showed the controller being moved across a flat surface - suggesting potential mouse functionality.

While Nintendo has remained silent about Switch 2 specifics, this patent filing confirms many community speculations about the new Joy-Con features.

Enhanced Joy-Con Features and Additional Controllers

The Switch 2 Joy-Con maintains the detachable design of its predecessor while introducing new mouse capabilities. According to the patent documentation, "The optical sensor for mouse operation detects surface reflections when either side of the controller is placed on a flat surface and moved."

Additional improvements include a new charging dock capable of charging two Joy-Con simultaneously, plus a magnetic attachment system with integrated wrist straps similar to the original Switch models.

The patent also introduces a new dual-controller design that can function either as separate mouse-like devices (with optical sensors on each unit) or combine into a traditional controller format using a special attachment.

It's important to note these features may not all appear in the final product, as Nintendo hasn't officially confirmed any Switch 2 controller specifications beyond what appeared in the reveal trailer.

Upcoming Nintendo Direct Announcement

Nintendo of America announced via Twitter (X) on February 5, 2025 that an upcoming Nintendo Direct focused on Switch 2 details will air on April 2, 2025 at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET across all official Nintendo channels.

While the Switch 2 trailer confirmed a 2025 release, Nintendo has yet to announce an exact launch date. Visit our Switch 2 coverage hub for the latest updates about the next-generation console.
