Townsfolk Revamp: New Mechanics, Structures, Compendium

By NoraMay 29,2026

  • Watch out for roaming Barbarian raiders
  • Look for the rare Whale in the ocean
  • What is the purpose of that ancient Obelisk?

Short Circuit Studio has released a new update for TownsFolk, their settlement-building game that launched last month. Fitting the darker tone of this charming pixel-art adventure, this content update is called "Shadows and Fortune" and introduces a host of new mechanics to explore.

Just because a game is new doesn't mean it won't expand its existing systems, and this is particularly true here. The latest update brings new structures and challenges to refresh the experience. This includes roaming Barbarians who will increase the tension in both campaign missions and Skirmish mode, alongside eight new buildings: the Altar, Town Square, Blacksmith, Aqueduct, Bank, Granary, Factory, and Terraformer.

Ocean tiles are also getting more lively with the addition of the rare Whale, plus unpredictable Special Locations like ancient Obelisks and new Shipwrecks.

To help you keep everything straight, a handy Compendium acts as an in-game encyclopedia. The Exploration System has also been redesigned, and you can now adjust Campaign Difficulties between Frontier and Survival modes.
