"Witcher 4: Geralt's Lead Role in Doubt, Says VA"

By JosephApr 23,2025

Exciting news for fans of *The Witcher* series: Geralt of Rivia, the iconic White Wolf, is set to return in *The Witcher 4*. However, voice actor Doug Cockle has revealed that while Geralt will make an appearance, the spotlight will shine on new characters this time around.

'It's Not About Him This Time', Voice Actor Said

Despite earlier hints that *The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt* would mark the end of Geralt's journey, Cockle confirmed in a recent interview with Fall Damage that the beloved monster hunter will indeed feature in *The Witcher 4*. Yet, fans should adjust their expectations, as Cockle clarified that the game's narrative will not revolve around Geralt.

"Witcher 4 has been announced. I can’t say anything about it. What we know is that Geralt will be part of the game," Cockle stated. "We just don’t know how much. And the game won’t focus on Geralt, so it’s not about him this time."

The identity of the new protagonist remains a mystery, with Cockle expressing his own curiosity: "We don’t know who it’s about. I’m excited to find out. I want to know." This suggests a fresh face might take center stage in the upcoming game.

Speculation about the new protagonist has led to intriguing theories. A subtle detail in the *Witcher 4* teaser from two years ago showcased a Cat medallion buried in the snow, hinting at a possible connection to the School of the Cat. Although the order was largely wiped out before *The Witcher 3*, *Gwent: The Witcher Card Game* suggests that some survivors might still roam, seeking vengeance.

Another popular theory points to Ciri, Geralt's adopted daughter, taking the lead. This is supported by her acquisition of a Cat medallion in the books and the subtle switch from a Wolf to a Cat medallion in *The Witcher 3* when players control Ciri. Some fans envision Ciri stepping into the protagonist role with Geralt as a mentor, similar to Vesemir, while others speculate his involvement might be limited to flashbacks or cameo appearances.

The Witcher 4’s Development

In an interview with Lega Nerd, *The Witcher 4*’s game director, Sebastian Kalemba, highlighted the game's dual aim: to attract new players while satisfying long-time fans eager for more of Geralt's story. Despite high anticipation, fans might have to wait a few years for the next installment.

*The Witcher 4*, codenamed Polaris, officially began development in 2023. By October of that year, nearly half of CD Projekt Red's development team—approximately 330 developers—was dedicated to the project following the release of *Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty*. This number has since increased to over 400, making *The Witcher 4* the studio’s largest project to date, according to Pawel Sasko, associate game director for *Cyberpunk 2077*’s upcoming sequel.

However, patience is required, as CEO Adam Kiciński indicated in October 2022 that the game’s release is at least three years away due to its ambitious scope and the development of new technology within Unreal Engine 5.
