Application Description

Chinese Chess, also known as Xiangqi, is a two-player strategic game that boasts a rich history spanning over 3,000 years. This game strikes a balance between moderate difficulty and ease of understanding, making it accessible yet challenging for players of all skill levels. The fundamental rules are straightforward, allowing new players to quickly grasp the basics.

Throughout its long history, the design of the chessboard and the pieces has evolved under the influence of traditional Chinese culture, resulting in the modern version we see today. The gameplay involves intricate strategies of offense and defense, blending the concepts of the real and the virtual, as well as managing the dynamics between the whole and its parts. This complexity can be both mesmerizing and addictive, drawing players deeper into the game.

How to Play Chinese Chess: Basic Rules

To get started with Chinese Chess, it's essential to understand the movement of each piece:

  • The General must remain within the Nine Palaces, a designated area on the board.
  • The Advisor (Shi Zhi) is confined to the palace and moves diagonally.
  • The Elephant moves diagonally and can only reach the four corners of the Sifang Camp.
  • The Horse moves in an L-shape, much like the knight in Western chess, and can jump over other pieces.
  • The Chariot (Car) moves in straight lines, horizontally or vertically, across the board.
  • The Cannon captures by jumping over exactly one piece, whether friend or foe, to reach its target.
  • The Soldier (Pawn) moves forward one step at a time and gains the ability to move sideways after crossing the river.
