Breakout, the iconic 1976 arcade game, is getting a modern makeover almost 50 years later! Breakout Beyond, developed by Choice Provisions (creators of the BIT.TRIP series), puts a fresh spin on the classic brick-breaker formula. Instead of the traditional vertical gameplay, Breakout Beyond features a horizontal progression, moving players from left to right.
The core gameplay remains: break bricks using a paddle and ball. However, as players chain together combos, the visual spectacle intensifies with dazzling lights and effects. Special bricks trigger unique and exciting effects, from powerful explosions to a laser cannon!
Prepare for a challenge with 72 planned levels, plus an unlockable endless mode boasting an online global leaderboard to test your skills against others. Prefer some friendly competition? Breakout Beyond offers local two-player co-op.
Interestingly, Breakout Beyond's journey is as captivating as its gameplay. Initially slated as an Intellivision Amico exclusive in 2020, Atari acquired the project and completed its development.
"We're excited to share this fantastic game with our players," stated Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing. "The team recognized the brilliance of the concept—maintaining the essence of Breakout while completely reinventing its feel. Breakout Beyond is a superb addition to the Breakout legacy, and we eagerly anticipate witnessing the incredible combos players will achieve."
The Intellivision Amico, originally announced in 2018 with a targeted 2020 release, remains unreleased, having faced numerous setbacks and delays over the years. Last year, Atari secured the Intellivision brand and intellectual property rights, but not the Amico console itself.
Breakout Beyond is launching later this year on PC, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox Series X & S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Atari VCS.
