Atelier Resleriana's Gacha-Free Spinoff
No More Gacha!
Koei Tecmo Europe announced on November 26, 2024 (via Twitter/X), that Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & The White Guardian will not include a gacha system. This is a significant departure from its mobile counterpart, Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator. This means players won't face paywalls to progress, eliminating the need for in-app purchases to unlock characters or powerful items.
Beyond the absence of gacha, the announcement highlights offline playability—no need to own the mobile game to enjoy this new adventure. The game's website promises "New protagonists and an original story await in Lantarna," suggesting a shared world but distinct narrative and characters.
Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian is slated for release on PS5, PS4, Switch, and Steam in 2025. Pricing and a precise release date remain unannounced.
The Mobile Game's Gacha System: A Retrospective
The mobile title, Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator, serves as the foundation for the upcoming game, yet differs significantly in its monetization. While retaining core Atelier elements like synthesis and turn-based combat, it incorporated a gacha mechanic that drew criticism.
The gacha utilized a "spark" system, awarding medals with each pull to unlock characters or Memoria (illustration cards). Unlike a pity system, it didn't guarantee a specific reward after a certain number of pulls. This system, coupled with the cost of pulls, caused friction among some Steam players.
Released in January 2024 on Steam, Android, and iOS, the mobile game boasts high ratings on mobile app stores (4.2/5 on Google Play, 4.6 on the App Store) but a mixed reception on Steam, largely due to the gacha system's perceived cost.
