This accolade, humorously dubbed the "Golden Thunk" award, highlights Animal Well's "engrossing experience," "style," and numerous "secrets." LocalThunk specifically praised Animal Well's solo developer, Billy Basso, calling the game a "true masterpiece." Basso responded with kind words, acknowledging LocalThunk's humility. The exchange exemplifies the positive camaraderie within the indie game development community.
Beyond Animal Well, LocalThunk's 2024 favorites included several other indie titles, including Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers, Arco, Nova Drift, Ballionaire, and Mouthwashing. He noted specific aspects he appreciated in each. Interestingly, Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers shares similarities with Balatro, being a pixel art deck-building game created by a single developer.
Balatro's continued success hasn't stopped LocalThunk from actively supporting the game. He's released three "Friends of Jimbo" updates featuring crossover content from popular IPs like Cyberpunk 2077, Among Us, and Dave the Diver. He's also teased a potential future collaboration with another top 2024 title.
