Balatro, the roguelike deckbuilder, has received a PEGI rating reclassification, moving from PEGI 18 to PEGI 12. This decision, following an appeal by the publisher to the ratings board, places the game on a more appropriate level compared to its initial, surprisingly mature rating. The initial PEGI 18 classification, which equated Balatro to games like Grand Theft Auto in terms of content, baffled many, including the developer Localthunk.
The developer announced the news on Twitter. This isn't Balatro's first brush with controversy; it was briefly removed from the Nintendo eShop due to concerns about its gambling content, despite the game not involving real money or bets. The in-game currency is purely for purchasing cards within each run.
The PEGI 18 rating stemmed largely from the game's depiction of gambling-related imagery. Ironically, the game's classification has also affected mobile platforms, despite the prevalence of in-app purchases in most mobile games. While the correction is welcome, the initial misclassification highlights a potential issue with rating consistency.
