Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a potential Baldur's Gate 4.
A Playable Baldur's Gate 4 Was Abandoned
In a PC Gamer interview, CEO Swen Vincke disclosed that a follow-up to BG3, already in a playable state, was abandoned. While acknowledging it was a project fans would have enjoyed, the team opted to pursue new, original ideas. The prospect of spending years iterating on a similar D&D title proved less appealing than developing fresh concepts.
The decision, according to Vincke, significantly boosted team morale. The studio is now focused on two unannounced projects, described as their most ambitious yet. A BG3 DLC was also shelved for similar reasons.
High Morale and Future Projects
The team's enthusiasm for these new projects is palpable. Following the success at The Game Awards 2023, the decision to move on from the Baldur's Gate franchise was met with relief and renewed creative energy. After a well-deserved break, the studio will concentrate on these undisclosed ventures.
Return to the Divinity Series?
Larian's history with the Divinity series suggests a possible return to that franchise. While a Divinity: Original Sin 3 isn't in the works, a new, unexpected entry in the series is on the horizon. This aligns with Vincke's earlier comments about a sequel being "definitely on the horizon."
Baldur's Gate 3's Future
Meanwhile, Baldur's Gate 3 will receive one last major patch in Fall 2024, incorporating mod support, cross-play, and new evil endings.
