Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting
Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3 has seen an explosive surge in mod usage following the release of Patch 7. The response from the community has been phenomenal, with an incredible number of mods downloaded in a short time.
Larian CEO Swen Vincke announced on Twitter (X) that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of Patch 7's September 5th launch. This figure was later surpassed, with mod.io founder Scott Reismanis reporting over 3 million installs and counting. "Modding is pretty big," Vincke stated, highlighting the game's robust modding community.
Patch 7 itself introduced significant additions, including new evil endings, enhanced split-screen functionality, and a crucial addition: Larian's integrated Mod Manager. This in-game tool simplifies the process of browsing, installing, and managing mods, enhancing the player experience.
The existing modding tools, accessible via Steam, empower modders to create their own content using Larian's Osiris scripting language. These tools enable custom script loading, basic debugging, and direct mod publishing.
Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon
Further fueling the modding excitement, a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) provides a full level editor and reactivates previously restricted features within Larian's editor. While Larian has previously expressed caution about providing unrestricted access to all development tools, the community's ingenuity is evident.
Larian is actively developing cross-platform modding support, a significant undertaking given the need for compatibility across PC and consoles. Vincke confirmed that PC support will launch first, followed by consoles after addressing potential issues and navigating platform submission processes.
Beyond the modding boom, Patch 7 delivered numerous improvements, including UI refinements, new animations, expanded dialogue options, and extensive bug fixes and performance optimizations. With more updates planned, the future of Baldur's Gate 3 modding looks incredibly bright.
