The game begins in the enigmatic Library of Babel, a sprawling structure inspired by the biblical Tower of Babel, built to reach heaven, and Jorge Luis Borges' short story, which envisions a library containing every conceivable combination of letters, thus housing every book ever written. You awaken in this mysterious place, unsure of how you arrived, surrounded by a colorful cast of characters who are equally puzzled. It seems you're destined for greatness, but there's a catch: a giant spinning orb threatens to obliterate everyone within twenty-four hours. Welcome to your first day as a Seer—hope you enjoy bookshelves!
Despite the jest, there's an undeniably captivating and wild charm to the setting and narrative. A library filled with nonsensical books, time travel, and numerous mythological references (we won't spoil too much, but that bird is definitely suspicious). The story plunges you into the deep end, and that's precisely the point. If you're feeling a bit lost, you're in good company—that's exactly what the developers intended.

Black Beacon's core gameplay experience is reminiscent of an ARPG dungeon crawler, offering a customizable camera perspective. You can opt for a top-down view or a free camera setup, which requires using your other hand to adjust the view. We found the latter more enjoyable, though it's largely a matter of personal taste.
You navigate through the Library's corridors, progressing towards your objectives. The story unfolds in short, episodic segments, each containing several maps. Accessing these sections involves spending some energy, but from our experience, the game is quite generous with how much you can play.
Your journey involves exploring areas, solving puzzles, uncovering hidden treasure chests, and battling enemies—distorted entities that are supposedly remnants of individuals the Library hasn't fully "digested." The combat is fast-paced and somewhat button-mashy, yet it remains engaging and challenging. Timing is crucial; executing a perfect dodge grants you a brief period of invincibility, while a well-timed heavy attack can interrupt an enemy's move, sparing you the need to dodge.
The game's character-swap mechanic adds a dynamic element to battles, allowing you to switch characters mid-fight. This tag-team approach lets you bench tired fighters—even during an attack—and bring in a fresh one. Once you master the timing, it's immensely satisfying... until a mistimed dodge sends you flying down the hallway courtesy of a giant monster.
Characters And Weapon Rolls
As a gacha game, Black Beacon includes a system for acquiring characters and weapons, with weapons tailored to specific characters. Both can be leveled up, and while the process involves numerous resources, much of the management can be automated, simplifying the experience.
You might encounter new characters through the gacha before meeting them in the game's narrative, adding a layer of variety. The flow of time in the game is convoluted, serving to enhance this diversity.
Overall, Black Beacon is an intriguing gacha game that ambitiously aims to weave a more esoteric tale, supported by solid gameplay mechanics. We're eager to see how the game evolves post-launch.
