Ed Boon Hints at T-1000 Fatality and Future DLC for Mortal Kombat 1

By StellaMay 13,2025

Mortal Kombat 1's development chief, Ed Boon, has stirred excitement within the gaming community by sharing a sneak peek of the upcoming guest character, T-1000 Terminator's Fatality on social media. This reveal coincides with the release of another guest character, Conan the Barbarian, and Boon's announcement that Mortal Kombat 1 has surpassed five million copies sold, up from the previously reported four million.

The teased Fatality for T-1000 showcases a thrilling moment where the character drives a smashed truck into the opponent, reminiscent of the iconic chase scene from Terminator 2. This nostalgic touch is sure to delight fans of the film franchise.

Boon's tweet also hinted at future DLC content, stating, "With Conan getting into player’s hands, we are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC!" This comment has sparked speculation among fans about the potential for additional downloadable content beyond the current lineup.

T-1000 Terminator marks the final character addition to the Khaos Reigns expansion, joining other fighters such as Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. As the final character in this set, fans are eager to know if NetherRealm Studios plans to introduce a third set of DLC characters or a Kombat Pack 3, especially given the game's sales success.

Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of NetherRealm, has shown strong support for the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav announced plans to focus intensely on four key titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them. Additionally, in September, Ed Boon confirmed that NetherRealm had chosen its next project three years prior but assured continued support for Mortal Kombat 1 "for a long time to come."

While many fans anticipate the next installment in NetherRealm's DC fighting game series, Injustice, neither the studio nor Warner Bros. has confirmed such plans. The Injustice series began with Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013, followed by Injustice 2 in 2017. Instead of alternating between the two franchises as initially expected, NetherRealm released Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019 and then the soft reboot, Mortal Kombat 1, in 2023.

In a June 2023 interview with IGN, Boon discussed the decision to release another Mortal Kombat game, citing factors like the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the switch to a newer version of the Unreal game engine. Mortal Kombat 11 used Unreal Engine 3, while Mortal Kombat 1 utilizes Unreal Engine 4. Boon emphasized the team's commitment to safety during the pandemic and their desire to work with the new engine as key influences on their decision.

When asked about the future of the Injustice franchise, Boon reassured fans that the door is "not at all" closed on Injustice, leaving room for potential future developments in that series.
