Hulu may be bringing Buffy back from the dead. Variety reports a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially returning as Buffy, albeit in a recurring role. The series will focus on a new Slayer.
Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao ( Nomadland, Eternals) is reportedly in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.
Whedon's absence follows allegations of a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the reboot will center around a new Slayer with the possibility of Gellar's reprisal.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight vampires and other supernatural creatures. Her allies included Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and Watcher Rupert Giles. The series continued through official comic books following a spin-off series, Angel.
