Captain America: Brave New World Hits $300M Globally Despite 68% U.S. Drop in Second Weekend

"Captain America: Brave New World" is swiftly approaching the $300 million mark at the global box office, but a staggering 68% drop in domestic revenue during its second weekend might hinder the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film from reaching its break-even point. According to Deadline, the film's production budget was $180 million, setting its break-even point at around $425 million.

The action-packed movie, led by Anthony Mackie, surpassed expectations by earning $100 million domestically over the Presidents Day weekend. However, it only managed to pull in $28.2 million during its second weekend domestically, mirroring the significant drop experienced by "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" in 2023, which also failed to break even.

After just two weekends, "Captain America: Brave New World" has accumulated an estimated $289.4 million globally, with $141.2 million coming from the domestic market and $148.2 million from international territories, as reported by Comscore. The film's second weekend brought in $63.5 million worldwide.

Despite being the biggest release of 2025 so far, the film's second weekend drop was sharper than anticipated, especially given the absence of competing blockbusters on the horizon. Senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian noted to Variety, "This is the new normal for Marvel movies. There’s still no denying these movies have appeal. But a second weekend drop of 68% reflects less audience enthusiasm than you’d expect from Marvel."

Deadline predicts that "Captain America: Brave New World" will ultimately gross about $450 million globally.

The film debuted to lukewarm reviews, with IGN's Captain America: Brave New World review scoring it a 5/10, stating, "Captain America: Brave New World feels neither brave, nor all that new, falling short of strong performances from Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, and Carl Lumbly."

Marvel Studios and Disney are now pinning their hopes on "Captain America: Brave New World" to regain momentum and reverse a worrying trend for MCU films, following the success of last year's "Deadpool & Wolverine." The industry is eagerly watching to see if the film can sustain its performance leading into the release of "Thunderbolts*" in May and "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" in July.
