Destiny 2 Year of Prophecy: Key Details for Guardians

By EthanDec 01,2025

Attention, Guardians: Bungie has announced what's next for Destiny 2, introducing two new expansions and significant seasonal updates, along with core gameplay enhancements for all players—both paying and free-to-play—under the banner of the "Year of Prophecy."

The Year of Prophecy is the first to feature four major content releases, including two paid expansions and two major updates. Expansions require purchase, while updates are free for everyone.

First, Rite of the Nine is now live—a new take on dungeon diving designed for veterans and newcomers alike. While the dungeons—Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep—will feel familiar, every Guardian can look forward to fresh twists, the chance to reconnect with Orin, and updated dungeon weapons.

Then, on July 15, the new expansion Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate arrives. This begins a multi-year story told across multiple expansions. A paid release, The Edge of Fate brings back the Nine—ancient, powerful beings who predate the Traveler—and spotlights two characters: a new ally named Lodi and Warlock Vanguard Ikora.

The expansion unfolds on Kepler, a new destination inspired by puzzle-solving, navigation, and deep exploration found in Destiny 2’s dungeons. Here, players will face new enemies, find new weapons and gear, and gain access to location-based abilities.

Also on July 15, expect major core improvements including revamped armor and gear systems for deeper buildcrafting, plus a new activity selection screen called the Portal.

Bungie explains: “Players can easily select Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, or the new Solo Ops. Fireteam and Pinnacle Ops emphasize quick cooperative play and longer team activities, while Solo Ops offers short, standalone experiences for those who prefer to play alone.

“Additionally, players can tailor activities to their preferred playstyle and reward goals. Fifty brand-new modifiers allow for deeper customization and greater challenges, while curated activity rotations ensure a steady stream of fresh content.”

As usual, pre-ordering comes with bonuses, such as an instant unlock of an Exotic Ghost and a Legendary Emblem. See the full details below:

The second major update, Ash & Iron, launches September 9, followed by the year’s second expansion, Renegades, on December 2. Finally, the Shadow & Order update arrives on March 3.

Destiny 2: Renegades, the second expansion in the Year of Prophecy, draws inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe, blending Destiny’s unique storytelling and gameplay with themes from the iconic sci-fi series.

This news will be welcomed by many players, especially after Bungie laid off 220 staff in July 2024—about 17% of its workforce—coming less than a year after another 100 employees were let go.

Of course, Bungie isn't focused only on Destiny 2. Marathon, announced in May 2023, revives the classic franchise, and we recently got our first hands-on experience. In IGN’s preview, we noted: “Based on alpha gameplay, Marathon seems poised to fill the Bungie PvP void we've felt for years. Let’s hope it hits it out of the park at launch on PC and consoles this September.”
