To equip your torch, open your inventory. First, equip a pouch. Then, select your torch and equip it. Exit your inventory. On consoles, hold down the d-pad to activate the torch; on PC, press the 'R' key. You'll see a red shield icon next to the torch in your inventory when it's equipped. Remember, torch flames eventually extinguish, so keep spares handy. Also note that you can only equip a torch with one-handed weapons; two-handed weapons and shields are incompatible with torch use.

Why You Need a Torch

Beyond illuminating the darkness and improving visibility, carrying a torch at night in settlements and towns is mandatory. Guards will aggressively pursue you if seen without one, leading to either a fine or imprisonment. Locals might also be less cooperative if you approach them unlit.

How to Get Torches

The easiest way to acquire torches is by purchasing them from general traders in towns or by looting them from fallen enemies and chests.
