Fallout developers, including New Vegas director Josh Sawyer, are open to creating a new Fallout game, but only under specific conditions.
Creative Freedom is Key
The willingness of these developers hinges on the creative leeway afforded to them. Sawyer, in a YouTube Q&A, emphasized the importance of defining project boundaries and permissible creative explorations. He stated that restrictive constraints would render the project unappealing, as the core motivation stems from exploring uncharted creative territories.
This sentiment is echoed by Fallout co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, who expressed interest in a Fallout: New Vegas remaster, but only if it allowed for innovative elements. Cain highlighted the need for novelty, stating that his participation depends on the introduction of fresh and engaging gameplay mechanics. He emphasized that the allure of a new Fallout project rests on its ability to offer something genuinely new and different.
Obsidian's Perspective
Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart also voiced his desire to develop another Fallout game, but confirmed in a January 2023 interview with Game Pressure that no such project was currently underway. He cited Obsidian's busy schedule with Avowed, Grounded, and Outer Worlds 2 as the primary reason. While expressing a strong personal interest in returning to the Fallout franchise before retirement, he acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the timing of such a project.
